HISTORY

The Department of Architecture/ Faculty of Architecture/Erciyes University, which forms the basis of the Faculty of Architecture, was opened within the Faculty of Engineering in accordance with the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated April 21, 1989 and numbered 8589 and started education with 20 students in 1991-1992 academic year. The Faculty of Architecture was established pursuant to the law dated July 3, 1992 and numbered 3837. It was opened with the establishment of three departments including “Department of Architecture”, “Department of Urban and Regional Planning”, and “Department of Industrial Products Design” according to the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated July 29, 1993 and numbered 14377. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning started education with 25 students in 1999-2000 academic year with the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated September 28, 1999. Students have not been admitted to the Department of Industrial Products Design yet. English language preparatory classes were opened at the Department of Architecture with the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated February 23, 1999, and at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning with the decision dated April 17, 2001. Affiliated to the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Master’s degree program was opened at the Department of Architecture in May 2002 and at the Department of Urbanism and Urban Design in 2005. Prof. Dr. Recep Kılık was the first acting Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and worked between September 16, 1993 and January 7, 1997. Between the years March 21, 1997 - Mart 24, 2003, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yurtsever became the Dean of the Faculty for two terms. Prof. Dr. Kerim Türkmen worked as an acting Dean for a period of 10 months between March 24, 2003 – February 18, 2004. Between the years February 18, 2004 – August 23, 2004, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yurtsever undertook the acting Dean’s position. Prof. Dr. Sevgi Lökçe worked as the Dean of the Faculty for two terms between September 7, 2004 – September 7, 2010. Vice Rector Prof.Dr. İbrahim Uzmay worked as the acting Dean of the Faculty under the responsibility of the ERU Rectorate between September 7, 2010 – January 26, 2012, Assoc. Prof. Gonca Büyükmıhçı between January 26, 2012 – June 15, 2015, and Prof. Dr. Murat DOĞAN until 07.09.2015 after that date. Prof. Dr. Veysel ASLANTAŞ worked as the Dean of the Faculty between 08.09.2015-10.02.2020. Prof. Dr. Gonca BÜYÜKMIHÇI became the acting Dean between 10.02.2020-02.04.2020 and has been acting as the principal Dean since 02.04.2020. Heads of the Department of Architecture are as follows: Lect. Yaşar Uğur (the first Head of the Department); later, Asst. Prof. Şaduman Sazak, Assoc. Prof. Hüseyin Yurtsever, Lect. Füsun Kocatürk (acting), Asst. Prof. Gonca Büyükmıhçı (acting), and Asst. Prof. Sencer Erkman. Prof. Dr. Sevgi Lökçe undertook the position of the Head of the Department on April 21, 20024. Asst. Prof. Burcu Ceylan worked as the Head of the Department between September 7, 2004-January 15, 2010. Between the years January 15, 2010 – October 24, 2011, Asst. Prof. Beyhan Bolak Hisarlıgil undertook this position. Between October 24, 2011 – May 2012, Assoc. Prof. Burcu Ceylan worked as the Department Head. Between May 8, 2012-September 9, 2013, Asst. Prof. Sencer Erkman was the Department Head. Between 09.09.2013-15.01.2014, Prof. Dr. Mehmet TUNÇEL worked as the Head of the Department. Lect. Sultan ŞİMŞEK undertook the position as the acting Head between January 15, 2014- March 9, 2015. Prof. Dr. Kemal DEMİR worked as the Department Head between March 9, 2015-25.02.2020. The position was under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Gonca BÜYÜKMIHÇI between 25.02.2020 tarihinden-15.06.2020. Assoc. Prof. Burcu SALGIN was the acting Head between 5.06.2020-16.11.2020. Assoc. Prof. Z. Özlem PARLAK BİÇER has been acting as the Head of the Department since 16.11.2020. Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Yaşlıca was the first Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning between 1999 – 2001. Then, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yurtsever, Prof. Dr. Güven Bilsel, and Asst. Prof. Erkan Polat acted as the acting Department Heads. Prof. Dr. Zühal Özcan became the Department Head between July 2004-September 2006. Asst. Prof. Ceyhan Yücelbu acted as the Head between September 2006-February 2008. Asst. Prof. Semih Halil Emür worked as the Head of the Department between February, 2008-April 20, 2011. Asst. Prof. Ozan Hovardaoğlu undertook the position between September 28, 2011-August 22, 2013. Asst. Prof. Methiye Gül ÇÖTELİ became the Department Head between August 29, 2013-December 15, 2014. Asst. Prof. Ozan Hovardaoğlu acted as the acting Head of the Department between December 15, 2014-March 9, 2015. Asst. Prof. Neşe YILMAZ BAKIR worked as the Department Head between March 9, 2015-June 12, 2016. Assoc. Prof. Ozan Hovardaoğlu acted as the Head of the Department between June 13, 2016-February 2, 2018. Assoc. Prof. Seda HOVARDAOĞLU undertook the position between 02.02.2018-06.05.2020. Prof. Dr. Barış ERGEN has been acting as the Head of the Department since 06.05.2020. The Department of Industrial Design was opened as semi-passive in accordance with the Decree Law No.667, and Asst. Prof. M. Çağlar BAYDOĞAN has been working as the acting Department Head since 04.10.2018. 39 academic staff members in total are working including 3 professors, 5 associate professors, 16 assistant professors, 1 lecturer, and 14 research assistants, at the faculty the faculty member requirement of which was met from other universities during the years it was established. This number reaches 49 with the faculty members from other faculties and part-time self-employed architects and urban and regional planners.
