About
City and Regional Planning Science is an interdisciplinary field that also uses the knowledge produced in different disciplines in both social sciences and natural sciences. In order to train students as planners in the field of City and Regional Planning, which is the only authorized professional field for the preparation of city plans designed for the solution of problems related to the city and urbanization, the design has been made in a way that integrates with both theoretical courses and applied project courses. Especially in applied project courses, students are given direct guidance through their projects, and the relationship between the practice and knowledge that our students have taken, particularly in theoretical courses, is established. However, the interdisciplinary nature of planning leads to an increase in the diversity of areas of expertise in planning. During undergraduate education, necessary referrals are made to diversified areas of expertise such as city planning, regional planning, regional development, rural planning, urban history, urban conservation, open and green space planning, computer aided design and urban design. In addition, urbanization in our country has entered a new process especially since the mid-2000s. Urbanization experiences, which were mostly tried to be explained in quantitative terms in the second half of the 20th century, have begun to be explained in qualitative terms in the current period. The fact that urbanization processes and experiences, and development processes and experiences that are directly related to urbanization are changing is of direct interest of our department both in research and education. In this respect, our primary objectives as the Department of City and Regional Planning are defined as follows:
• To be able to analyze this new urbanization process in our country and the variables related to it in more detail and in depth;
• To increase the contribution of scientific knowledge based on the research conducted by our department to the planning literature of our country in order to solve the problems related to urbanization that emerged in this process;
• To be able to analyze the similarities and differences with the urbanization experiences in our country by examining the urbanization experiences at the international level and to contribute directly to the international literature accordingly;
• To make a theoretical contribution to planning practice at the international level by creating conceptual frameworks from the analyzes of urbanization experiences in our country;
• To train our students as planners with the knowledge required by this new urbanization process;
• To make our department a more productive, competitive and investigative department at undergraduate and graduate levels in terms of the above-mentioned objectives.
